Engaging in self-help by focusing on others

I read an entry in Doc Searls' weblog called "Other realities". In this entry, Doc mentions an article by Rep. Howard Berman titled "The Truth About The Peer To Peer Privacy Prevention Act".

This article refers to granting copyright owners immunity from liability for "reasonable, limited self-help" on P2P networks.

Think about the term "self-help" for a minute. How many of you out there think that this means inward reflection, with an aim to improve oneself?

And how many of you think that "self-help" means to reach out and influence the behavior of everyone else, to your benefit?

If you think the latter, do you work for the music or movie industry? Or for Rep. Berman? Just wondering...
